Travel guide: Cambridge

A complete guide on what you can do for the day. Time to take a trip out of the city to the nearby gem that is Cambridge! 

There is plenty to explore in one of the easiest day trips to arrange! Less than an hour away from London, Cambridge is rich in history and beautiful architecture but if you're stuck on what activities to prioritise while you're there then you've come to the right place!  

Flashback to 2022

There are always new days trips being arranged, with trips to Cambridge being one of the most popular (spaces sell out fast!). As you can see from the compilation of last year's trip, you will be struggling for time with all the stuff you'll want to do. If you want to see any upcoming events then LSE Residential Life will keep you up to date and you can purchase any tickets you might need as well. You also have the option to go independently from the uni but make sure to share any good photos with @lsereslife.



What to do in Cambridge

Behold, the top picks of things you can do if you only have the day:

Activities

• Punting - A tradition/must-do when visiting Cambridge. Get a guided punt (a long narrow flat bottomed boat) tour down the river Cam where you will see all the universities and colleges. The best deals are online (£30.00 for 3 tickets on a group tour), so recommended to book there rather than in person.
• Fitzwilliam museum - A FREE activity in the heart of Cambridge. Lots of exciting exhibits, open Tue-Sat 10:00  - 17:00, (and Sundays/Bank Holidays 12:00 - 17:00). Have to book your space for the new Islanders: Making of the Mediterranean exhibition, opening on the 24th Feb.
• Evensong at King's College - End the day with a 470+ year-old FREE tradition, the Evensong ceremony. Choir and organ music, taking place during term time 17:30 Mon-Sat and 15:30 on Sunday. Recommended arriving 30 mins before kick-off to get a good seat and it's FREE.

Sightseeing

• Climb Great St Mary's Tower - If you want a good view of the city to get your bearings, recommend climbing up the tower at Great St Mary's church (with a newly refurbished viewing platform). Tickets are £6.00 for an adult, open 10:00 - 16:00 Mon-Sat and 12:00 - 16:00 on Sundays.
• Christ's College - A FREE self-guided tour (or options for guided) around the beautiful grounds including the Fellows' Garden (on weekdays). Open 09:00 - 16:00 and does not require pre-booking. There are plenty of other university grounds to visit as well, such as Corpus Christi College (but not all host free tours).
• The Round Church - A real slice of the 12th century, built by crusaders as Cambridge grew around it for 900 years. Guided walks cost £10.00 per person while entrance alone is only £1.00 (student prices)! Open only 10:00 - 17:00 Tue-Sat.

Food and drink

• Hot Numbers coffee - In the mood for a delicious brew? No place is better in Cambridge, they also serve a number of lovely breakfast options. Recommend the VANILLA CHAI ROOIBOS (£2.50) if you're feeling indulgent.
• Aromi Italian deli - Great for both a sit-down meal and takeaway if you want to be more on the go. All the classics of the cuisine are done to perfection. Average meal prices are £10.00 or below. 
• The Eagle pub - One of the oldest pubs in Cambridge, so why take a pit stop, grab a pint and soak in the history!

What about other trips?

Cambridge isn't the only spot LSE hit up, trips to Oxford, Bath (Stonehenge) and even Berlin happened last year! Keep on the lookout for when you can book to go.
