Moving In Made Easy: FAQs

We know you'll have a lot of questions before you move in with us and we want the process to be as easy as possible. So we've put together a list of common questions asked by students to help prepare you for the big move. 

Moving procedures

• Do I have to book a time slot to move in? Yes, you do. You can find it at the end of your online induction.
• Can I change the arrival slot afterwards? You can, based on the availability. 
• Where can I see my accommodation contract? You can find your accommodation contract on your LSE student accommodation account. 
• Can I store my luggage at my halls for the day before arriving? Unfortunately our halls have very limited storage so you won't be able to store any luggage ahead of your arrival. 
• Are my parents allowed to come into the halls and help me move in? Yes, of course. Your parents can definitely help you move in and we'll be around to say hello to everyone. 
• Will my early arrival room be the same as the one for the rest of the year, or do I have to move? Our accommodation team will try their best to keep you in the same room, but it does depend on the room availability in your hall so it's best to be prepared for either. 
• Am I at a disadvantage in getting allocated to a room if I don't use early arrival? No, not at all! Don't worry, early arrival does not make a difference to your room allocation. 
• Does an international student have to pay council tax during the early arrival period at an LSE hall? No, you don't have to pay council tax if you live in a student hall. 
• Where do I collect the move-in kit that I purchased from Unikitout? Depending on what hall you are in, you can collect it from your reception team or it will be waiting for you in your room (remember you can use the discount code LSE10 for 10% off!). 

What is and isn't allowed in LSE halls

• Are you allowed to have battery-powered fairy lights in your room? Yes, you are! 
• Are you allowed to use incense sticks and candles in your room? No, unfortunately they are not allowed as they're a fire hazard - it's always better to be safe than sorry. 
• Are electric pressure cookers and rice cookers allowed in the kitchen? Yes, they are allowed in the kitchen. But they are not allowed in your rooms, you can refer to the Student Halls handbook for more information. 
• Are you allowed to use a steamer or iron in your room? Please only use the iron located in the Laundry room in your hall. Steamers aren't allowed as they can activate the fire alarm, so please don't bring any irons or steamers to your hall.

Flatmates, communal areas and events

• Will I be getting contact details of my flatmates before arrival? You will be able to get to know your flatmates once you arrive. However, you can always join your hall's WhatsApp group to get to know your hallmates.  
• Where can I find the WhatsApp group link for my hall? You will find the link to your hall's WhatsApp group in your hall online induction. You can also email us at residential.life@lse.ac.uk after you have arrived at the hall and we can add you to the group chat.
• Will we get paired with another person in a flat if we have both requested it? Yes, the accommodation team will try its best to pair you up!
• Can we play video games on the communal area TVs and are these provided by the halls? If there is a system in your common room, we encourage you to use it. If your hall doesn't have one yet, you can contact your Hall Committee in your halls to arrange one if there is interest from the hall residents. 
• How does Freshers week work? Freshers week is a great opportunity to meet fellow LSE students and make new friends. There will be your programme orientation and lots of events organised by your hall and LSESU to look forward to. Make sure you keep an eye on your inbox, the LSE welcome site and our official social media accounts so you don't miss anything!
