Biggest game releases of 2023
A real jam-packed year of gaming is ahead of us, be prepared!
This year (fingers crossed) will see a huge number of games released that people have been waiting YEARS for. We should have a lot of AAA titles in our hands within a matter of months, both games that have been in development for ages (and pushed back multiple times) and likely a few surprises as well. Now we can't predict the future on that front, but we can go through all the fully confirmed games so you know exactly what to keep on your radar.
We've already had one big release back in Feb, Hogwarts Legacy which has unsurprisingly sold like crazy and has had overall positive reviews. But this is just a taste of things to come!
Resident Evil 4 - 24th March
Genre: Horror/Action, survival
Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PC
Developer: Capcom
Coming up first we have the hotly anticipated remake of the all-time classic, Resident Evil 4 (2005). Now it's not just a visual upgrade, the whole game has been remade from the ground up, with improvements to gameplay and tonnes of quality-of-life improvements. The same great bonkers story is retained though of course!
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor - 28th April
Genre: Sci-fi/Adventure, (semi) open-world RPG
Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC
Developer: Respawn Entertainment
After a short six-week delay, the sequel to the critically acclaimed Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (2019) will be landing in April and it looks like the developers have gone for the 'if it ain't broke' approach...which is a good thing! This is looking to be one of the best single-player Star Wars games ever, with exciting lightsaber combat and force-bending traversal.
Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - 12th May
Genre: Fantasy/Adventure, open-world RPG
Platform: Nintendo Switch exclusive
Developer: Nintendo
A sequel to arguably one of the biggest games of the modern age, LOZ: Breath of the Wild (2017), is still shrouded in mystery with only a few hints about the new story and gameplay. The latest trailer showed off some kind of vehicle/weapon-building mechanic that has been added to the game but other than that, who knows! Not that the lack of knowledge will stop people from purchasing it because...well, it's Zelda.
Final Fantasy XVI - 22nd June
Genre: Fantasy/Action, JRPG
Platform: PlayStation 5 exclusive
Developer: Square Enix
This is the 16th mainline entry in the Final Fantasy franchise but don't worry, the story is completely separate from the rest so it's still friendly to newcomers. Japanese roleplaying games tend to hit a little differently compared with their Western counterparts, with crazy over-the-top action and highly detailed worlds. Expect this one to keep that trend going.
Pikmin 4 - 21st July
Genre: Adventure, real-time strategy
Platform: Nintendo Switch exclusive
Developer: Nintendo
Easily the cutest game on the list, Pikmin 4 will be the first one in the series to release on the Nintendo Switch (not including the port of 3 from the Wii U) and is keeping that amazing core gameplay of collecting items by utilising your little plant friends before the sun goes down. They've made the very key and important addition of giving you a dog-like companion so now it's a must-buy.
Baldur's Gate 3 - 31st August
Genre: Fantasy, RPG
Platform: PlayStation 5, PC, Mac (and eventually Xbox)
Developer: Larian Studios
The ultimate fantasy role-playing game that attempts to bring in as many of the tabletop (dungeons and dragons-esque) features as possible. For example, you will have dice roles when performing actions in combat and conversations, to give it that proper D&D feel. The version of the game has been in early access since 2020 but the full release comes in hot at the end of August. Recommended only for the more experienced gamer!
Starfield - 6th September
Genre: Sci-fi/Adventure, open-world RPG Shooter
Platform: Xbox exclusive
Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
Last but certainly not least out of the games with confirmed release dates for this year is Starfield. It's the next title from the creators of some of the biggest gaming franchises ever such as Fallout and the Elder Scrolls series. It's the only game on this list to be a completely new IP rather than a sequel or remake and if you subscribe to Game Pass (Xbox's streaming subscription service), it will be available amongst the library of games on day one.
Honourable mentions
Here are a few games that didn't make the cut but still deserve a little shoutout:
- Dead Island 2 - 21st April
- Redfall - 2nd May
- Street Fighter 6 - 2nd June
- Diablo IV - 6th June
As you can see there are plenty of games to sink plenty of hours into this year. Now the question is how do you decide on what to play first!
