Take small steps to avoid being scammed

We should all be on the lookout for scams, especially when it comes to phone calls and emails. Scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their attempts to trick students out of their money, personal information, and sensitive data. To help you stay safe, informed, and one step ahead, we've put together some easy tips that you can follow to protect yourself against scams. For a more detailed guide, you can read our guide on fraud which breaks down the types of scams that are currently out there.

Important tips to safeguard yourself from scams

  1. Always verify the source: Always verify the authenticity of phone calls and emails. Double-check the contact's identity by calling the official number or visiting the official website of the organisation in question. For example, if someone rings claiming to be from your bank, you can just hang up and ring back on the phone number you find on their website. They will be more than happy for you to do this as it shows you are taking the necessary steps to stay secure.
  2. Use strong passwords: Protect your online accounts with strong, unique passwords, and enable two-factor authentication when available.
  3. Educate yourself: Learn to recognise common scam tactics, red flags, and phishing attempts. Stay informed about the latest scams targeting students. There are websites you can check such as the FCAs that will have up-to-date information you need.
  4. Keep personal information private: Avoid sharing personal information, such as your passport, financial details, and passwords, unless you are certain the request is legitimate.
  5. Report suspicious activity: If you encounter a scam or suspect fraudulent activity, report it to LSE's security or financial aid office and relevant authorities. This will not only help you but everyone else!

Remember, scams can happen to anyone, so stay vigilant and protect yourself from potential threats. By staying informed and cautious, you can enjoy your LSE experience with confidence and peace of mind. For more advice, check out our fraud and payment security resources for students.
