LGBT+ Spaces and Resources in Sheffield

Moving to a new city can be strange and intimidating but we’re here to help you find friends and family. 

Here at the University of Sheffield we support our LGBTQ+ students in a variety of ways;



LGBT+ Accommodation - Our LGBT+ accommodation opened in Ranmoor/Endcliffe in 2018. When applying for university accommodation, you  will have the option to select 'LGBT+ accommodation', these are flats that are reserved for those who identify as LGBT+ and wish to live with others who identify similarly. 

LGBT+ Committee - Joining the LGBT+ group at University is completely FREE. Their aims are to give people a chance to meet other LGBT+ people, and to give you a channel to go through if you have any LGBT+ related issues at University. The committee is here to represent all students of minority gender identities / sexual orientations within the Sheffield University Students Union. We aim to provide welfare support, social opportunities, and campaigning platforms for all LGBT+ students. The committee runs a wide variety of socials so there's something for everyone! In the SU there is an LGBT+ lounge that you can drop into at any time and meet new people. 

LGBTQ+ Students Officer - Every year the student body elect 12 officers to lead the SU. There are 5 full time officers and 7 part time officers. This year our LGBTQ+ Student Officer is Jamie Shipp. The role exists to promote LGBT+ students views and interests. 

University Support - Information, support and advice for LGBT+ students at UOS. You'll need to login to access this information. 

Sheffield Pride - Pride in Sheffield was formed in 2019     . Manchester Pride is also a short train ride away if you want to get involved with that too! 

LGBT Sheffield - A volunteer-led charity attempting to give Sheffield a unique, centralised and shared LGBT identity, and can signpost LGBT+ people to specific services that may be on offer.  

SAYiT - Offers activities and support groups for LGBT+ young people (aged 11 - 25) , supporting their emotional wellbeing.

Stonewall - The largest LGBT rights charity in Europe. On their website you'll find help and advice, events near you and how to get involved. 

Remember, if you have any concerns, you can always arrange to speak to your Residence Life Mentor or attend the Residence Life Mentor Drop-in.

Sport

Peak Queer Adventures - Queer folks taking up space climbing, hiking, cycling and swimming, meet new people and explore Sheffield!

Sheffield Hiking Dykes - A lesbian walking group, set up in 1991. They have a walk of between 6 and 8 miles every 2nd Sunday, mostly in The Peak District. New members are always welcome!

Trans Active - Trans Active aims to help the trans community in and around Sheffield socialise and improve their fitness and mental wellbeing through sport in a safe, relaxed environment. Their activities are open to all trans and non-binary people, including those questioning their gender identity.

Trans and Non Binary Football Sheffield - Free 'turn up and play' football session for trans, non binary, and intersex people. They run fortnightly sessions; currently on a Sunday morning at Endcliffe Park in Sheffield. Open to anyone over 18.

Sheffield Vulcans - The Steel City’s premier LGBTQIA+ inclusive rugby club Inclusive Rugby means that whether you are gay/straight, big/small, young/old, an experienced rugby player or never picked up a ball, they want to see you get involved and join the Sheffield Vulcans. Your first four sessions are free so you can have a taste, see if rugby is for you, and get to know us. Once you’ve joined up, membership starts from only £7.50 a month!

Rainbow Blades - Sheffield United's official & affiliated LGBTQ+ & Allies supporters' group.

Rainbow Owls - New LGBTQ+ supporters' group of Sheffield Wednesday FC, fostering an inclusive and accepting footballing culture. 

Sheffield Steel Roller Deby (SSRD) - The OG’s with skating opportunities for all. The adults' league caters solely to female and non-binary skaters, and they are explicitly trans-friendly.

Queer Skate Sheffield - Follow this Page is run by some queer skaters (mostly beginner/intermediate), who enjoy relaxed skate meet up around Sheffield



Culture

Out Aloud -  Sheffield’s LGBT+ choir with over 80 members and have been going strong since 2006. They’re open to anyone from the LGBT+ community with no auditions.

Theatre Deli - Theatre Deli is a charity. They turn disused spaces into inclusive and accessible spaces of creative activity. Programming at Theatre Deli focuses on new talent, our network of artists form a community of early career creatives – so far, shows have included everything from touring productions fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe to immersive theatre, improv comedy to celebrations of LGBTQ culture. 

Gut Level - Not-for-profit community space and collective that aims to provide social and creative opportunities for underrepresented groups in Sheffield, with a particular focus on LGBTQ+ people and marginalised genders.

Showroom Cinema - Sheffield’s original independent cinema which also has a bar - if you fancy watching an LGBT+ film. Level access and disabled toilet provided. 

Treehouse Board Game Cafe - If you’re keen on some board games you might want to check out Treehouse Board Game Café. Situated at the bottom of London Road - you have access to over 700 board games. With a café / bar serving a great selection of cask ales, wines and spirits and plenty of hot beverages, non-alcoholic options, alongside homemade food catering for vegans, you can expect a warm welcome here. Pre pandemic they ran Treehouse Rainbow Gamers, for all members of the LGBTQIA community. Keep an eye on their social media to see when this may return. Level access and disabled toilet. 



Nights out

Grapefruit Club night at Sheffield SU - A night of dance, chart and queer anthems for you to boogie the night away! Bring yourselves, be yourselves and come and get down on the dancefloor with us as we let loose and celebrate all things Queer. We are inclusive, we are friendly and we are all about the good vibes. 

Andro and Eve - Celebrating queer culture through memorable events that inspire. They are the creators of drag King cabaret, The Kingdom Come, showcasing drag king talent from across the UK. They also created the queer cabaret A Reyt Queer Do which provides a platform for emerging talent. Andro and Eve also produce one off film screenings, often with themed décor, treats, live performance or director Q&A’s.

Dorothy Pax - Over in the upcoming area of Victoria Quays is quirky waterside drinking hole, Dorothy Pax. LGBT+ owned, it’s really come into its own in 2021, with a lively crowd drinking by the canal day and night. Known for its eclectic live music offer, often featuring folk artists
