How to...Clean your flat

By epickersgill 05 Jul 2022

Living with other people can be amazing and exciting but after a few weeks of independence the dishes might start to pile up on the sides and the bathroom might start to look like a swamp. We've complied our top tips and reminders to keep your new home in the best shape possible!

Top Tips for Cleaning;

  • Don’t buy the cheapest big bags - they might split and cause you more mess and stress!
  • Try to be sustainable - you can buy cleaning sprays that come in tablets and you just add water. These often end up cheaper too!
  • Tidy little and often! Instead of doing one big clean every week or two make sure that you do small tasks every day e.g. you wipe down the sides after you’ve used the kitchen
  • Make sure that you’re keeping of top of the food in the fridge - check those sell by dates!
  • Wash your dishes straight away after you’ve eaten - pasta bake can really stick!
  • Take those plates and cups out of your room! No one wants to come in and see a collection of dunelms finest holding dust, old food and hair.
  • Make your bed daily - it’s so much nicer to come
  • Open your bedroom window daily - make sure that the air circulates; especially after you’ve had a shower
  • Dusting might not be your biggest priority but you can easily get rid of it in a few minutes and it will improve your air quality. Start with the highest part of your room and work downwards- hoover last!
  • To avoid arguments, make a cleaning rota! Take it in turns to do different chores every week and make sure you do your bit. If your having problems with sharing responsibilities you can always arrange to speak to your Residence Life Mentor or attend the Residence Life Mentor Drop-in.
