Battle of the supermarkets

Choosing the Best Supermarket for You

As a university student, navigating the huge range of supermarkets in the UK can seem overwhelming as each store caters to different needs and budgets. In this blog post, I'll explore some of the popular supermarket options available in the UK, highlighting the best places to shop as a student. It's definitely worth trying out different stores to see which one is the best for your needs, here are your options:

Tesco

tesco

Tesco, the largest supermarket chain in the UK, offers an extensive range of products, making it a popular choice for students. With a diverse selection of fresh produce, groceries, household items, and electronics, Tesco caters to all your shopping needs under one roof. They have affordable in-house brands and regular sales, providing excellent value for money. Make sure to get a Tesco Clubcard to get exclusive deals and collect points, providing opportunities for future savings.

There are only the smaller Tesco Express stores in Bath, but, you can simply order online to shop the full product range.

Lidl

Lidl is a fantastic budget-friendly option for students and it's one of my personal favourites for that reason. Lidl does not sell as many branded products compared to competitors, but its own brand's quality is perceived to be just as high. If you're shopping at Lidl, be sure to download the Lidl Plus app to get exclusive deals and discounts.

Conveniently, there is a large Lidl store on Lower Bristol Road which you can get to by bus if you're coming from campus or town. Lidl does not offer online delivery.

Aldi is a similar supermarket to Lidl, but as there is no store in Bath and online delivery is not available, it is not included on this list.

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's strikes a balance between quality and convenience. Whilst it's not always the cheapest option, Sainsbury's has an extensive product range, including premium items. There is a large store next to Green Park Station in town which makes Sainsbury's a popular choice for students at Bath. However, if you're looking for a more affordable option it may be worth travelling slightly further to Lidl or shopping online elsewhere.

Sainsbury's also offers a loyalty scheme called Nectar that lets you earn points while shopping, providing opportunities for future savings or rewards.

Morrisons

Morrisons offers a vast fresh produce section, making it a top choice if you prioritise quality. This store also often has competitive prices on essential items. There is a large store on London Road which is around 20 minutes from town or a short bus ride away. There is also a smaller Market Kitchen store in town which offers food-to-go options.

If you shop here make sure to get the Morrisons More app or card to get exclusive offers and points that provide opportunities for future savings.

Asda

Asda is known for its affordable pricing and wide range of products. There isn't an Asda store in Bath but you can order online for home delivery. They offer numerous options across different price points, catering to various budgets. Asda's popular 'Just Essentials' range provides excellent value for money on basic items which is perfect if you're working towards a tight budget. Make sure you download the Asda Rewards app that lets you earn money off future shops and exclusive deals.

Asda won the Free From Retailer of the Year 2023 award, so I'd recommend this store if you have specific dietary requirements.

Fresh

Fresh is the on-campus supermarket, located on the Parade. It's a small supermarket in partnership with Southern Co-op and is a great option for convenience and on-the-go food options. Fresh also boasts a great world food range and zero-waste dry goods in The Refillery.

The Co-op/Fresh also offers discounts for students through the NUS Extra card which provides further savings on eligible purchases. As Fresh is a small supermarket, I would consider choosing another store if you are looking for a wide product range.

Waitrose

Waitrose is an upscale supermarket that focuses on quality and ethical sourcing. It's known to be more expensive than other supermarkets but it offers an exceptional selection of fresh, locally-sourced produce and premium products. If you prioritise organic and responsibly-sourced food, Waitrose is a great option for you. However, if you're looking for budget-friendly groceries, I would recommend avoiding Waitrose!

There is a large Waitrose store in town with a food and homeware section. Make sure you sign up for a myWaitrose card if you do choose to shop here for exclusive deals each week.

M&S

M&S is known for its high-quality food offerings. Similarly to Waitrose, M&S is not the most budget-friendly option, as it offers a wide range of premium products that appeal to those looking for a touch of luxury. Although, it is a great store to go to for a treat on special occasions. You'll find an M&S in town, just head through the clothing section to find the food hall.

If you decide to shop at M&S, be sure to get a Sparks loyalty card to get some exclusive deals.

Hopefully, this guide has given you an insight into the different supermarkets in the UK and will help you work out which one you're going to shop at whilst studying in Bath. Remember to try out different stores to see which one is the best for your needs!
