Exam Tip: Take Regular Breaks to Avoid Burnout During Exam Season
Students often find themselves putting in long hours of study to prepare for their exams. While this may seem like the best way to achieve good grades, it can have a negative impact on your health and wellbeing. Burnout is a real problem and can lead to decreased productivity, poor mental health, and even physical illness. Taking regular breaks is essential to avoid burnout and stay healthy during this stressful time.
Here are some reasons why taking breaks is so important:
- Helps reduce stress: Taking regular breaks can help reduce stress levels and prevent burnout. When you take a break, you allow your mind and body to relax, which can help you stay focused and motivated.
- Increases productivity: Studies have shown that taking regular breaks can actually increase productivity. When you take a break, you allow your brain to recharge, which can help you come back to your work with renewed focus and energy.
- Improves mental health: Burnout can have a negative impact on your mental health. Taking regular breaks can help prevent burnout and reduce the risk of mental health issues like depression and anxiety.
- Promotes physical health: Sitting for long periods of time can have a negative impact on your physical health. Taking regular breaks can help improve circulation and reduce the risk of physical health problems like back pain and eye strain.
Are you finding it hard to take a break?
Here are some tips on how to take regular breaks during exam season:
- Schedule your breaks: Plan your study sessions in advance and schedule regular breaks every hour or two - if you are working on a topic that is rather taxing, a scheduled break is something you can look forward to :)
- Take short breaks: Take short, frequent breaks to help your mind and body recharge. This could be a 5-minute walk, a quick stretch, or a short meditation. Use the timer on your phone to make sure you're sticking to the time.
- Get outside: Spending time in nature can help reduce stress and improve mental wellbeing. Take a short walk outside during your break to get some fresh air and sunlight (hopefully, we’ll get plenty of it this May!).
- Try a relaxation technique: There are many relaxation techniques that can help you reduce stress and promote relaxation. Try deep breathing or guided meditation (you can use an app to help you with it, see below).
- Use apps: There are many apps available that can help you take regular breaks and promote relaxation. Some popular apps include Headspace, Calm, and Mindfulness.
Taking regular breaks is essential to avoid burnout and stay healthy during exam season. Remember, your health is just as important as your grades (if not more…).
