CoppaFeel: Have you checked your boobs lately?

By bzgeorge 12 Aug 2019

“I'm only 20 - I'm not going to get breast cancer!"

This was my first response when I heard about CoppaFeel – the charity promoting breast cancer awareness to young people. Unfortunately, being only twenty (or in your teenage years) does not make me, or anyone else, immune to cancer.

CoppaFeel was founded by Kristin Hallenga and her sister Maren in 2009. At 23 Kris found a lump in her breast. After two doctors insisted it was harmless, she was finally referred to the breast clinic. She was later diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, which had spread to her spine. Ten years later and Kris is still living with cancer.

Check out this documentary to learn more about Kris’ story.

While fighting cancer, Kris realised how little information there was to educate young people on the disease. Did you know that you have a higher chance of surviving if you catch it early? This is why Kris made the charity, CoppaFeel, and it has become the fastest-growing charity in the UK.

Check out their website to find out how to thoroughly check your boobs for any lumps or other signs of cancer. It takes two minutes – but it really could save your life.

Did you know that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women under 40?

Despite 90% of women aged 18-29 wanting to raise awareness of breast cancer, only 30% of them check their boobs regularly. Do you know what that means? It's time we started incorporating breast checks into our monthly routine. Whether you check yours in the shower or while you’re getting ready for your 9am lecture, it's essential to be aware of your breast health.

Men aren't exempt from this either. Men have breast tissue in their chest and 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year so let your dad, uncle, brother, friends and boyfriends know that they need to check regularly too!

If you want to get involved with the CoppaFeel campaign, check for your boob team on campus OR create your own. Whether you are in the RAG society or just want to spread the word, contact Coppafeel to find out more
