Fire Safety in Halls
Living in halls means you need to know some important fire safety information.
Watch the video below carefully so you are aware of what can cause a fire and how to prevent one happening in your halls.
REMEMBER:
- Items like mini-fridges and electric fan heaters are not permitted (unless cleared by the Accommodation Office on medical grounds).
- Items such as washing machines, driers and 3D printers are not permitted in halls.
- Cooking appliances such as kettles, coffee machines and rice cookers are not permitted in the bedroom. Please keep them in the kitchen.
- Never leave your cooking unattended.
- Always unplug hair straighteners/curlers after use.
- Avoid spraying deodorant or any aerosols under your smoke detectors - they are very sensitive!
- Leave the smoke detectors alone! Don't tamper with or cover them.
- Don't smoke anywhere in the building (inc. vape and e-cigarettes) - anyone found smoking will be fined £50 at the first instance.
- Never leave fire doors propped open and never tamper with any fire equipment*.
Having a greasy grill pan and oven can also be a dangerous fire hazard, so clean them regularly. It's a good idea to open windows and keep kitchen fire doors closed when you are cooking too!
For safety reasons, the maintenance team also carries out a weekly fire alarm test. The test usually lasts 10 - 30 seconds, if the alarms continues after 30 seconds, please vacate the building in a calm manner .
*The University has a zero-tolerance policy on students tampering with fire equipment. You could be expelled and face a criminal record.
It's also very important to know exactly what to do should a fire start in your halls and familiarise yourself with the evacuation procedure. For what to do in the event of a fire, carefully read this article.
