Vanessa's Travel Blog: St. Andrews

Last week I visited St. Andrews, perhaps most famously known worldwide for being the "Home of Golf"

...And where Kate and Wills met while studying at St. Andrews University :P

Our first stop along the way from Glasgow was a quick visit to the Kelpies, two 30-metre high horse-head sculptures in Falkirk that were finished just last year! The Kelpies were designed by sculptor Andrew Scott, a native of Falkirk. I found them absolutely stunning and visually arresting, we even got to see them light up in the dark as we drove past them once more on our way back to Glasgow later on in the evening!

Our next stop was Forth Bridge, which is featured on the 20 pound note issued by the Bank of Scotland. It was just our luck that a rainbow popped out behind the bridge as soon as we arrived!

Finally, we arrived in St. Andrews, a quaint yet vibrant seaside town with a rich and vast history behind it. I found the St. Andrews Cathedral to be particularly interesting, even though it lies entirely in ruins! The building of the structure started all the way back in the 1160's and took around 150 years to complete, but it fell to disuse and ruins in the 1500's. Another thing I quite liked about St. Andrews was its abundance of quirky, low-lying doorways!

We also visited the buildings of St. Andrews university, the oldest university in Scotland and the 3rd-oldest in the English-speaking world, and the Old Course, one of the oldest golf courses in the world. St. Andrews is certainly full of ancient wonders! The beach was also quite stunning; the flat, unending expanse of sand, the blue waters, the town stretching into the distance, and the fiery colours of the sunset reflected against the clouds was certainly a sight to behold.

Stay tuned for more adventures. Coming up...I’ll be heading out of the UK!
