Student Apartments FAQs

Pre-Arrival

Can I look around a typical room before I decide to accept?

As the accommodation is let all year round it is not always possible to show prospective residents a typical room. During certain times we can take people round the common areas so contact the Student Apartments’ office on 0141 330 6182 to arrange a suitable time.

Can I arrive before the start of my contract?

 

Yes, if accommodation is available. Please email Accommodation Services at accom@glasgow.ac.uk to register your interest and check availability.

Students arriving before the start of the accommodation contract cannot be guaranteed accommodation and you may be required to find alternative accommodation before the start date of the contract.

Where do I collect my keys?

Key collection for Student Apartments generally takes place at the main site office at 89 Gibson Street. Out of hours, keys are usually held at the main University Gatehouse on University Avenue.

Please also look out for our pre arrival email on the lead up to your arrival which will advise of the check in process.

Is there a car park attached to the Residence?

No, there is only metered parking around the Hillhead area and permits for street parking are expensive.

What do I need when living in halls?

Everything that is needed for independent living! This includes; crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, saucepans, towels. Check out our What to Bring to Uni guide for more info.

Glasgow University Environmental Sustainability Team (GUEST) run initiatives to reduce waste through ‘passing on’ essentials between students and may be able to help you get what you need!

Can I bring my bike?

Unfortunately, we do not have secure storage areas for bikes within Student Apartments but you can use the cycle stands at the University Library nearby which are covered by CCTV.

Can I bring my own TV?

Yes, but it must be fitted with a correctly rated fuse, correctly wired plug and a cable in good order. Students must obtain their own TV license. See www.tvlicensing.co.uk for more details.

Is bedding provided?

Students will need to provide their own bedding, bed linen and towels.

If buying bed linen please check that sizes are either UK single or UK double as sometimes sizes will vary according to manufacturer.

Location and Travel

What is the residence address?

The main site office for Student Apartments is located at 89 Gibson Street, Glasgow G12 8LD. Flats are also located on Gibson Street, Hillhead Street and Southpark Avenue.

Where can I find travel directions?

 

You'll find a Google map for Student Apartments in the Arrival Information page on the Accommodation Services website.

How close is the Residence to the University ?

Student Houses are situated on campus on Hillhead Street and Gibson Street. They are only a two minute walk from the Main University Building. Student Flats on Southpark Terrace are also only a two minute walk away.

How close is the residence to Glasgow city centre?

Student Apartments is only around 20-minutes on foot from the city centre.

How can I get to Glasgow International Airport?

A taxi will cost you approximately £30. If you wish to use public transport it is possible to get a bus from Partick Bus Station to take you to the Airport. Please allow yourself plenty of time to get to the Airport if you choose to use this service. Alternatively there is an airport shuttle bus that will take you directly to the airport from Buchanan Bus Station every 15 – 20 minutes, a single ticket costs £10 and an open return lasting 28 days is £16.

Are there medical facilities near the residence?

Yes, Barclay Medical Practice is located in the Fraser Building on campus and other practices are located within a short walk of Student Apartments.

What is the surrounding area like?

Student Apartments are very close to the University Library and other University Buildings as well as the Student Unions, Stevenson Sport Building, Byres Road, the Botanic Gardens and Kelvingrove Park.

Reception

How do I contact the main site reception?

Is there an emergency contact number?

During normal office hours, Monday- Friday 9am- 5pm, please phone the Student Apartments’ office on 0141 330 6182.

Outside these hours we have Residence Life Assistants who can be contacted on 07816364291 and security staff at the Gatehouse on University Avenue can be contacted on 0141 330 4282.

Is there anyone available out of office hours?

During the week from 6.30pm a Residence Life Assistant will be on-duty and available to assist with any problems during the evening. They are also available during the day on weekends.

University security staff are based at the University Gatehouse and they are there 24 hours a day every day.

What assistance is available in the residence?

You will be invited to a site induction and welcome talks where you will meet members of the management and pastoral team and representatives from Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue who will all pass on some helpful hints to ensure you get the most out of your stay.

Is there a laundry on site?

Yes, there are laundry facilities available at 79 Great George Street and 8 Southpark Terrace.

My Room

What size are the beds?

In Student Apartments all single and twin rooms feature single beds.

When will I receive my room number and address details?

You will receive your full room and address details upon checking in.

Will an inventory be carried out on my room / flat?

Upon arrival, you must complete your room inventory (which will be sent to your email address).

Will there be flat inspections during my time in residence?

There will be two flat and room inspections carried out during your stay and you will be provided with further information after you have arrived.

Is Internet/WiFi available in the room?

Yes, Wi-Fi is available in Student Apartments and all flats within the residence through Optify. Details on how to set up your internet will be provided on check in.

Any issues with the internet should be raised with Optify directly. You can report your issues directly to Optify, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, by contacting; 

Do I need to take everything out of my room at Christmas and Easter Holidays?

No, your contract includes holiday periods, you do not have to remove your belongings.

Can my friends stay overnight?

Yes, outside of arrivals weekend and Freshers Week, you are able to invite a friend to stay overnight in your bedroom for a maximum of three nights, per calendar month, free of charge.

Please note that overnight guests are not permitted during Freshers' Week and Arrivals Weekend.

What happens if I lose my keys?

You should contact staff at the Student Apartments’ office as soon as possible. A new set of keys will be issued and you will be invoiced accordingly. The cost of a replacement set of keys will be £25.

What happens to my mail/parcel/delivery?

Mail is delivered to individual addresses.

How do I report a repair?

All repairs must be reported to the office studentapartments@glagow.ac.uk/ tel: 0141 330 6182 or call into the office at 89 Gibson Street and staff will take appropriate action.

In an emergency outside of office hours you should contact the duty Residence Life Assistant and they will arrange for assistance to be provided.

If the repair is non-urgent and the office is closed please complete an online repair form or email the office with the details.

What am I responsible for cleaning?

Your own bedroom in all Student Apartments and communal areas in Student Flats. In the larger Student Houses a cleaning service is provided Monday to Friday for communal toilets and showers, kitchen surfaces and floors. Areas must be kept tidy for this service to be carried out.

All residents in Student Apartments are responsible for making a constructive effort to keep their accommodation clean and tidy by taking the rubbish and recycling out and doing their own dishes.

How can I find out what the Block Halls Insurance Policy covers?

University of Glasgow has arranged contents insurance cover for you with Endsleigh, the number 1 student insurance provider.

Input your policy number HH1357 at www.endsleigh.co.uk to check your policy details. Here you will find more information on how to check what is covered, some key exclusions and limitations, how to check your policy excess, how to extend and personalise your cover and most importantly, how to make a claim.

What if I want to move room or to a different site?

Room Transfer forms will be available from 9am on the Monday of Freshers Week. The transfer form will be available on your accommodation account, this is the on- line portal you used when creating your application. You will need your user name and password in order to log on.

Can I extend my stay over the summer months?

It may be possible to extend over the summer months, but places are limited. You will be asked to complete a form in third term indicating that you wish to extend. Please note that you may be required to move flat.

My Kitchen

Does the residence have student cooking facilities?

All the kitchens at Student Apartments are well-equipped with: cooker; fridge-freezer; microwave; kettle; toaster; breakfast bar; and individual shelf space.

Are cooking utensils, crockery supplied?

Yes, basic crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils are provided in Student Flats and Student Houses

How can I recycle my waste?

There will be a rubbish bin and a separate recycling bin in each kitchen and there are both general and recycling bins in the backcourts of our buildings.

Accommodation Fees

How do I pay my accommodation fees?

All of your accommodation fees are paid through your MyCampus account. 

The main options for paying your accommodation fees are Direct DebitMonthly Payment Plan or via a single one-off payment.

Just remember to make arrangements to set up your payment plan immediately to ensure that you are on time for the first instalment that is due in October.

Are utilities included in the fees?
Yes, all heating, hot water and electricity, and internet is included in your rent.
