Staying safe on your bike

A bike is a great way to get around Glasgow and with more and more bike lanes and bike parking being available it is hard to resist getting one!

However, with the changeable weather and traffic conditions we thought a few safety tips and reminders could be useful to help keep you safe.

Make sure your bike is roadworthy - this is a no brainer as flat tyres or non-working brakes can not only damage your bike but end with a trip in an ambulance or worse...
Indicate when you turn - Whilst you may know where you're going, others do not. Simply reach your arm out before you turn so everyone else knows you will be turning in that direction. Left arm for turning left, right arm for turning right, raise one of your arms to indicate you are stopping.
Be seen and heard - Make sure you have lights on whilst riding at night and wear something bright like a fluorescent jacket. Use that bell so people walking in front of you know you are coming!
Be aware of your surroundings - don't listen to music whilst riding as you can't hear the traffic around you and make sure you check around you before turning.
Follow the highway code - don't ride down the wrong way on a street and only ride the pavement where you're allowed to as not all pavements in Glasgow are permitted for use by cyclists.
