Pre-Arrival

Can I look around a typical room before I decide to accept?

It may be possible to arrange a visit by contacting the Queen Margaret office on 0141 339 3273. If you arrive for a visit without contacting the office first, we cannot guarantee that there will be a staff member available to show you the accommodation.

Alternatively you can check the University website for a list of University Open days where it may be possible to visit the Residence.

Can I arrive before the start of my contract?

Yes, if accommodation is available. Please email Accommodation Services at accom@glasgow.ac.uk to register your interest and check availability.

Students arriving before the start of the accommodation contract cannot be guaranteed accommodation and you may be required to find alternative accommodation before the start date of the contract.

Where do I collect my keys?

Key collection for both Queen Margaret Residence and Winton Drive generally takes place at the Queen Margaret reception but you will find full details on where to collect your keys in the Arrival Information page on the Accommodation Services website

Please also look out for our pre arrival email on the lead up to your arrival which will advise of the check in process.

Is there a car park attached to the Residence?

There is a private car park on site but anyone wishing to use the private car park during term time must register their car details at reception.

What do I need when living in halls?

Everything that is needed for independent living! This includes; crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, saucepans, towels. Check out our What to Bring to Uni guide for more info.

Can I bring my bike?

Yes, there are lockable bike stores located across the site. Your bedroom key will open the bike sheds.

Please note that all tenants are responsible for making sure that their bicycle is adequately insured and secured. You can insure your bike as part of your Block Halls policy by going to www.endsleigh.co.uk.

Can I bring my own TV?

Yes, but it must be fitted with a correctly rated fuse, correctly wired plug and a cable in good order. Students must obtain their own TV license. See www.tvlicensing.co.uk for more details.

Is bedding provided?

Students will need to provide their own bedding, bed linen and towels.

If buying bed linen please check that sizes are either UK single or UK double as sometimes sizes will vary according to manufacturer.

What is the residence address?

Where can I find travel directions?

How close are Queen Margaret and Winton Drive to the University?

How close is the residence to Glasgow city centre?

Queen Margaret Residences are only around 40-minutes on foot from the city centre.

Is there a bus that goes to the University from the residence?

There is public transport that runs from Great Western Road to Byres Road with a short walk to University from there.One provider of this route is First Bus.

A few minutes walk from the residences there is a bus stop where there is public transport taking you directly into Glasgow City centre. Alternatively you could walk to Byres Road where you can get the underground train to Glasgow City Centre.

If you are under-22 you may also be eligible for free bus travel.

How can I get to Glasgow International Airport?

A taxi will cost you approximately £30. If you wish to use public transport it is possible to get a bus from Partick Bus Station to take you to the Airport. Please allow yourself plenty of time to get to the Airport if you choose to use this service. Alternatively there is an airport shuttle bus that will take you directly to the airport from Buchanan Bus Station, a single ticket costs £9 and an open return lasting 28 days is £14.50

Are there medical facilities near the residence?

There are several doctors' surgeries near Queen Margaret Residences and there is also a medical centre located on the Main Campus.

What is the surrounding area like?

Queen Margaret Residences are located in the heart of the upmarket Kirklee area and wherever you go, you’ll never be far from art venues, museums, parks, bars, pubs restaurants, shops and much more!

Reception

How do I contact the main site reception?

Is there an emergency contact number?

The office telephone number is 0141 339 3273 and is available 24 hours a day.

Is there anyone available out of office hours?

After 6pm there is always a Residence Life Assistant available to assist with any problems.

The residence also has security based at Queen Margaret reception every night from 5pm until 8am that will be happy to assist with any queries you may have.

What assistance is available in the residence?

Queen Margaret Residences office is based at Queen Margeret and is open from 8am - 6pm, Monday to Friday.

The Residence Life Team – pastoral staff members appointed by the University are responsible for the flats outwith office hours. 

There are also night security staff based at Queen Margaret who are on duty each night from 5pm to 8am. 

You will be invited to a site induction and welcome talks where you will meet members of the management and pastoral team and representatives from Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue who will all pass on some helpful hints to ensure you get the most out of your stay.

Is there a laundry on site?

Yes, Queen Margaret and Winton Drive both have their own laundry facilities.

My Room

What size are the beds?

  • In Queen Margaret all the bedrooms have ¾ size beds (4ft wide).
  • In Winton Drive all rooms have single beds.
When will I receive my room number and address details?

You will receive your full room and address details upon checking in.

Will an inventory be carried out on my room / flat?

Upon arrival, you must complete your room inventory (which will be sent to your email address).

Will there be flat inspections during my time in residence?

There will be two flat and room inspections carried out during your stay and you will be provided with further information on this when you arrive.

Is Internet/WiFi available in the room?

Yes, Wi-Fi is available in Queen Margaret Residences and all flats within the residence through Optify. Details on how to set up your internet will be provided on check in.

Any issues with the internet should be raised with Optify directly. You can report your issues directly to Optify, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, by contacting; 

Do I need to take everything out of my room at Christmas and Easter Holidays?

No, your contract includes holiday periods, you do not have to remove your belongings.

Can my friends stay overnight?
Can my friends stay overnight?

Yes, outside of arrivals weekend and Freshers Week, you are able to invite a friend to stay overnight in your bedroom for a maximum of three nights, per calendar month, free of charge. 

Please refer to the Accommodation Services Overnight Guest policy and procedure for more info. 

Please note that overnight guests are not permitted during Freshers' Week and Arrivals Weekend.

What happens if I lose my keys?

You must let staff at reception at Queen Margaret know.Please try to avoid carrying your keys with anything that would identify your address. A charge will be made for the replacement key and fob.

What happens to my mail/parcel delivery?

Mail is delivered directly to the letter boxes at the front door of the flats. If an item is too big for your letter box, the postman will put a note in your letter box telling you where to collect it.

We do not take parcels at reception.

How do I report a repair?

All repairs must be reported to the office and staff will take appropriate action. 

In an emergency outside of office hours you should contact the duty Residence Life Assistant who will call the relevant member of the maintenance team. This is in an extreme emergency only.

If the repair is non-urgent and the office is closed please complete an on-line repair form.

What am I responsible for cleaning?

You are responsible for cleaning your own bedroom and keeping all shared areas such as kitchen, toilets and showers clean and tidy throughout the week. Your flat kitchen and communal areas will receive a weekly service by site staff.

How can I find out what the Block Halls Insurance Policy covers?

University of Glasgow has arranged contents insurance cover for you with Endsleigh, the number 1 student insurance provider.

Input your policy number HH1357 at www.endsleigh.co.uk to check your policy details. Here you will find more information on how to check what is covered, some key exclusions and limitations, how to check your policy excess, how to extend and personalise your cover and most importantly, how to make a claim

What if I want to move room or to a different site?

Room Transfer forms will be available from 9am on the Monday of Freshers Week. The transfer form will be available on your accommodation account, this is the on- line portal you used when creating your application. You will need your user name and password in order to log on.

Can I extend my stay over the summer months?

It may be possible to extend over the summer months, but places are limited. You will be asked to complete a form in third term indicating that you wish to extend. Please note that you may be required to move flat.

My Kitchen

Does the residence have student cooking facilities?
 

All the kitchens at Queen Margaret and Winton Drive are well-equipped with: cooker; fridge-freezer; microwave; kettle; toaster; breakfast bar; and individual shelf space.

Are cooking utensils, crockery supplied?

No, crockery etc. is not supplied by the University. We do supply an iron, ironing board, vacuum cleaner, brush, shovel, mop and bucket.

How can I recycle my waste?

You have bins in your flat that are for your recycling. These can then be taken to the blue recycling bins which are situated near each block. Paper, cans, tins and plastic bottles can all be recycled in these.

There is also a navy blue bin at each block which is for clean glass.

Accommodation Fees

How do I pay my accommodation fees?
 

All of your accommodation fees are paid through your MyCampus account. 

The main options for paying your accommodation fees are Direct DebitMonthly Payment Plan or via a single one-off payment.

Just remember to make arrangements to set up your payment plan immediately to ensure that you are on time for the first instalment that is due in October.

Are utilities included in the fees?

Yes, all heating, hot water and electricity, and internet is included in your rent
