Meet Your Thurso Street Residence Staff

Welcome to Thurso Street

In our accommodation we aim to build a safe, inclusive respectful and diverse student community. With the help of our residence staff, Residence Life teams, security and University Support Services you can be assured that your health, safety and wellbeing are at the forefront of everything we do. Don't worry you'll never have to manage alone!

Thurso Street Management Staff

What do they do?

  • The Thurso Street team is headed up by Christopher Fleming​ Accommodation Manager.
  • The team also includes Liz Housekeeper extraordinaire Liz.  Liz carries out daily upkeep of the site as well as conducting our monthly kitchen inspections - she is pivotal in ensuring that you have great spaces to study, unwind and live! Christopher,  the Student Experience Team Leader who helps to oversee the daily operations of the site and manages the Student Experience Team. Joseph and Bhagyashree in the Student Experience Team who help to keep the property ticking over and assist with any queries. James in Facilities  who keeps everything in working order and fixes any maintenance issues.
  • Christopher's team are located in the reception at the Thurso Street reception 24 hours a day, seven days a week!
  • Main office opening times are: 10am to 12pm, 3pm to 8pm and 10.30pm to 2.30am 
  • If nobody is available at reception, you can contact the Emergency Control Centre on 0300 303 1611 and they will be able to contact the team directly. You will also be able to download the My Unite App that allows you to log any lock outs, maintenance jobs and even chat with flatmates. 
  • They're responsible for the smooth running of the accommodation and to make sure your stay at Thurso Street is enjoyable.
  • They are here to answer any queries you have and they can listen and offer guidance and assistance if you are having any problems.
  • They are available to provide guidance and support from welfare concerns, flat disputes and are trained in Mental Health and Physical First Aid. 
  • They can access other areas of support within the University and they can arrange repairs either through the on-site estates team or through liaison with external contractors.
  • They are responsible for the domestic and maintenance staff working in your accommodation.

Residence Life

What do they do?

The team is made up of a Warden, Senior Residence Life Assistants (SRLAs) and Residence Life Assistants (RLs). They are current University of Glasgow staff and students who live on site and provide out of hours support to residents. They were all new to the University at one point too and have lots of advice and experience to share with you. The team are fully trained and happy to help with a range of issues:

  • Settling into university life and independent living.
  • Getting to know your halls and the local area.
  • Health concerns, First Aid, Mental Health First aid, and accessing medical help.
  • Need someone to talk to or feeling homesick.
  • Course worries, exam stress, and managing a work/life balance.
  • Noisy neighbours, getting along with flatmates.
  • Fire safety and responding to fire alarm activations.
  • Arranging emergency repairs out of hours.

Domestic and Maintenance staff

What do they do?

  • They clean and maintain the communal areas outside of your flat.
  • Remember - it's your job to keep your bedroom clean and the communal areas clear. You must keep your accommodation free from rubbish, using the external bin facilities around site( and not left on the ground for pests to raid)
  • They will be happy to advise you on your own cleaning responsibilities and will monitor your progress.
  • The maintenance team will visit to carry out minor repairs and assist in the general upkeep of the building.
  • They assist the Accommodation Manager in the smooth running of the site.

Security

What do they do?

  • The Night Safety team work from 10pm to 7am ensuring the safety of the property, responding to noise complaints and securing the site throughout the night time. The team changes throughout the week however, everyone has a great understanding of the site meaning that they can identify any issue in the wee hours of the morning. 
  • They will help you and your fellow students create a peaceful environment, so they might ask you to be quiet after 11pm! 
  • Remember they are here for your safety and security.
  • For extra peace of mind you can download the Safezone app. The app is monitored 24 hours a day and ensures the safety and security of all our students whether you are on campus, at your residence or anywhere in between. 
  • Additional 24-hour assistance is available from University Security at Gilmorehill Campus 

Allocations Team

What do they do?

  • They are responsible for room allocations in the Residences.
  • Contact them if you want to move rooms / residences.
  • They can also provide general advice on housing matters, including renting in the private sector.
  • They work normal office hours: Monday-Friday 8am to 4pm.
