Maclay Residences FAQs

Pre-Arrival

Can I look around a typical room before I decide to accept?

Yes, please contact Accommodation Services or Maclay Residences Office prior to your visit to check availability. Rooms can also be viewed on our Flickr album and in our 360° image gallery.

We also have a 360° film tour of Maclay available on our YouTube channel.

Alternatively you can check the University website for a list of University Open days where it may be possible to visit the Residence.

Can I arrive before the start of my contract?

If accommodation is available, yes. Please email Accommodation Services at accom@glasgow.ac.uk to register your interest and check availability.

Students arriving before the start of the accommodation contract cannot be guaranteed accommodation and you may be required to find alternative accommodation before the start date of the contract.

Where do I collect my keys?

You will be able to collect your keys from the Maclay reception which is located to the left as you enter the site.

Is there a car park attached to the Residence?

Yes, free car parking facilities are available on site, please register your car with reception upon arrival.

What do I need when living in Residence?

A set of bed linen and bedding will be provided and will be in your room for your arrival. However, you will need everything that is needed for independent living such as; crockery, cooking utensils etc. Check out our What to Bring to Uni guide for more info.

If you are an overseas student and you need an adaptor, please ensure that the adaptor and any electrical equipment conforms and are marked to the British Standard (BS) or CE standard, as adaptors that do not meet the standard will be removed.

Are there bicycle storage facilities at Maclay?

Yes, we have secure bike sheds onsite, however, you may wish to arrange additional insurance cover as your residence insurance will only cover Bikes up to a certain amount based on forced entry and only when locked in University designated storage areas. A free bike shed key can be collected from reception.

Can I bring my own TV?

Yes, you can bring your own TV but you are responsible for arranging and paying your own TV licence. Arial Sockets are only available in the kitchen common area.

Is bedding provided?

Students will need to provide their own bedding, bed linen and towels.

If buying bed linen please check that sizes are either UK single or UK double as sometimes sizes will vary according to manufacturer.

Where can I find travel directions?

How close in the Residence to the University?

Approximately 20 mins walk (medium walking speed) to the main campus. You'll find more our UofGLiving Walking Guide.

How close is the residence to Glasgow city centre?

Maclay is around 30 min on foot to the city centre.

How can I get to Glasgow International Airport?

An airport bus service runs approximately 8 times per hour to Buchanan Bus Station in the city centre. (The service runs from 0630 to 2400 hours, Monday to Friday and on Sundays, and from 0600 to 2400 hours on Saturdays. For further information regarding this service telephone 08705 505050. From the city centre you can take a taxi to Maclay Residences. See Glasgow Airport travel information for more details. 

Alternatively, you could take a taxi from the airport directly to the accommodation.

Is there a bus that goes to the University from the Residence?

There is a bus stop on Sauchiehall Street approximately 7 mins walk from Maclay Residences where you can travel to the main campus via the city centre (transferring at Buchanan bus station) . One provider of this route is First Bus.

If you are under-22 you may also be eligible for free bus travel.

Are there medical facilities near the residence?

Yes, a medical practice is located on the Main Campus, other practices are located within a short walk from the residence.

What is the surrounding area like?

Maclay Residence is located at the end of a street which has many other student halls of residence located on it and is near the Finnieston area popular with students and young professionals.

SWG3, an arts and entertainment venue is located next door and you're only a short walk from Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Kelvingrove Park.

What is the weather like in Glasgow?

The weather in Glasgow is varied and will change season to season. Due to the location of the city the climate is oceanic in nature. Temperatures are mild and we do recommend to bring a raincoat and warm layers for the colder months.

How do I contact Reception?

Is there an emergency contact number?

The office telephone number is 0141 339 6272 and is available 24hrs a day

Is there anyone available out of office hours?

The Office is usually open from 8 a.m. till 6 p.m. weekdays (4 p.m. on a public holiday if it falls on a term time date).

The Duty Residence Life assistant is in the office from 6 p.m. till 7 p.m. all 7 days. They are also on call throughout the night.

What assistance is available in the residence?

Maclay Residences office is open from 8am - 6pm, Monday to Friday.

The Residence Life Team – pastoral staff members appointed by the University are responsible for the flats outwith office hours. There are also night security staff based at Maclay who are on duty each night from 5pm to 8am.

You will be invited to a site induction and welcome talks where you will meet members of the management and pastoral team and representatives from Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue who will all pass on some helpful hints to ensure you get the most out of your stay.

Is there a laundry on site?

Yes, the laundry at Maclay is located right next to the site office.

What happens to my mail / parcel delivery?

Mail is delivered directly to the letter box of each flat.  If an item is too big for the letter box and no one is available to collect it in the flat, a card from the delivery company will be left advising you how to collect it.

When you move into the residences you will be provided with your full postal address.  Please be very careful and specific when issuing your address to avoid any confusion/incorrect deliveries.  No reference should be made to 9 Cooperage Place when you provide your address.

Please note reception cannot take delivery of any items either before your arrival or during term time

My Room

What size are the beds at Maclay?

In Maclay, the Bronze rooms have single beds and the Silver rooms feature ¾ sized beds (fits UK double bedding size).

When will I receive my room number and address details?

You will receive your full room and address details upon checking in

Will an inventory be carried out on my room / flat?

Upon arrival, you must complete your room inventory (which will be sent to your email address). 

Will there be flat inspections during my time in residence?

There will be termly flat and room inspections carried out during your stay, you will be provided with further information on this when you arrive.

Is Internet/WiFi available in the room?

Yes, Wi-Fi is available in Maclay and all flats within the residence through Optify

Any issues with the internet should be raised with Optify directly. You can report your issues directly to Optify, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, by contacting; 

Do I need to take everything out of my room at Christmas and Easter Holidays?

No, your contract includes holiday periods, you do not have to remove your belongings.

Can my friends stay overnight?

Yes, outside of arrivals weekend and Freshers Week, you are able to invite a friend to stay overnight in your bedroom for a maximum of three nights, per calendar month, free of charge. 

Please refer to the Accommodation Services Overnight Guest policy and procedure for more info.

Please note that overnight guests are not permitted during Freshers' Week and Arrivals Weekend.

What happens if I lose my keys?

You should notify staff as soon as possible and a spare key can be issued via the office with a charge of £20 per key being made for its replacement. For additional security please avoid labelling your key with any specific room details

How do I report a repair?

All repairs must be reported to the office and staff will take appropriate action. In an emergency outside of office hours you should contact the duty Res Life Assistant who will call the relevant member of the maintenance team. This is in an extreme emergency only. If the repair is non-urgent and the office is closed please complete an on-line repair form.

What am I responsible for cleaning?

You are responsible for cleaning your own bedroom and keeping all shared areas such as kitchen, toilets and shower clean and tidy throughout the week. Regular checks are carried out to ensure areas are kept clean.

How can I find out what the Block Halls Insurance Policy covers?

University of Glasgow has arranged contents insurance cover for you with Endsleigh, the number 1 student insurance provider.

Input your policy number HH1357 at www.endsleigh.co.uk to check your policy details. Here you will find more information on how to check what is covered, some key exclusions and limitations, how to check your policy excess, how to extend and personalise your cover and most importantly, how to make a claim.

What if I want to move room or to a different site?

Room Transfer forms will be available from 9am on the Monday of Freshers Week. The transfer form will be available on your accommodation account, this is the on- line portal you used when creating your application. You will need your user name and password in order to log on. Can I extend my stay over the summer months?

It may be possible to extend over the summer months, but places are limited. You will be asked to complete a form in third term indicating that you wish to extend. Please note that you may be required to move flats

My Kitchen

Does the residence have student cooking facilities?

Each kitchen at Maclay is well-equipped with: cooker; fridge-freezer; microwave; kettle; toaster; breakfast bar; and individual shelf space.

Are cooking utensils, crockery supplied?

No, crockery etc. is not supplied by the University. We do supply an iron, ironing board, vacuum cleaner, brush, shovel, mop and bucket

How can I recycle my waste?

You have 1 general waste bin and 1 recycling bin in your flat kitchen. These can then be taken to the grey general waste and blue recycling bins which are situated at the front of the residence. Paper, cans, tins and plastic bottles can all be recycled in the blue bins.

Glass recycling is available behind 11 Cooperage Place.

Accommodation Fees

How do I pay my accommodation fees?

All of your accommodation fees are paid through your MyCampus account.

The main options for paying your accommodation fees are Direct DebitMonthly Payment Plan or via a single one-off payment.

Just remember to make arrangements to set up your payment plan immediately to ensure that you are on time for the first instalment that is due in October.

Are utilities included in the fees?

Yes, all heating, hot water and electricity, and internet is included in your rent
