GlasgowGuide: The Hunterian
Well, in this new GlasgowGuide I thought I’d go for a cosy, safe, weather-proof, indoor activity: our University Museum.
Did you know we’ve got Scotland’s oldest public museum right here on Campus? Our very own University Museum, The Hunterian, was founded in 1807 and is home to one of the finest university collections in the world!
The Hunterian Museum is located in the Main Building. Its displays include scientific instruments used by James Watt and Lord Kelvin, a ‘curious’ anatomical collection and Roman artefacts from the Antonine Wall which once stood from the Clyde to the Forth.
The Hunterian Art Gallery sits just next to the library. It houses a great collection of James Whistler‘s works, as well as Scottish Art from the Glasgow Boys and Scottish Colourists. Spotted the floating house on your way to the library? That’s The Mackintosh House, an impressive reconstruction of the home the artists Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald shared in the west end. A must see for art and design enthusiasts!
There is also a small Zoology Museum at the Graham Kerr Building for animal buffs and even an Anatomy Museum for those who want to explore deeper – by appointment only!
Entry is FREE to ALL exhibitions for students and staff!
