Top 5 cities to visit in the UK

By SanctuarySocial 19 Mar 2023

In no particular order...

If you're planning on seeing what the cities of the United Kingdom have to offer, then maybe start with these beauties first! Yes, there are the obvious ones like London but there's a good chance you've already been there, and done that. Try these instead:

York

a castle on top of a lush green field

A real northern gem, brimming with a medieval vibe and tonnes of stuff to do for a weekend getaway. In York, you can indulge in history through the Jorvik Viking Centre or by visiting the beautiful cathedral that is York Minster. You also won't struggle to find a nice drinking spot as York has 365 pubs, one for every day of the year...

Glasgow

Clyde Arc over a body of water

Scotland's biggest city has a surprising amount of museums and galleries to dive into as well as all the things you'd expect from a modern city. Amazing nightlife, and lots of cool independent businesses mixed in with the franchises. You won't struggle to find that unique item or unforgettable bite at one of Glasgow's 10 weekend markets

Cardiff

The capital of Wales is a compact delight that somehow balances castles with modern waterfronts. You'll find beaches, valleys and more nearby, so you can plan an amazingly varied city break with ease. We'd recommend checking out Cardiff castle and if you time it right, going to a gig at one of the city's breathtaking venues.

Bath

Bath is a southern sensation relishing in its own history. You will at times feel as if you've stepped into the past with all the gorgeous Georgian architecture, especially if you visit the famous Roman Baths the city gets its name from. If you're feeling inspired to take a dip, then you can actually do so in a rooftop spa (but it will cost you a small fortune!).

Belfast

The capital of Northern Ireland is mostly known for being the birthplace of the Titanic, but if you look further you will find a city that doesn't disappoint on any level. From a hip nightlife vibe to plenty of restaurants offering a multitude of cuisines, Belfast is quickly becoming a must-visit destination in the UK.

Already explored these cities? There are plenty more out there, check Lonely Planet for details on the rest or start planning a holiday abroad for cheap!
