Frenchay Guide - Where to Eat

By AccommodationHannah 14 Feb 2024

We are spoilt for choice on Frenchay campus. Not only do we have loads of places to eat and drink on campus, but Bristol’s famous independent cafes, bars and restaurants are often less than half an hour away.

On campus

From grabbing a quick Greggs sausage roll to enjoying fish and chips on a Friday, there are so many options on Frenchay Campus to sink your teeth into. Here are some of Student Life’s favourites…

Onezone – E block

Onezone, the main sit-down, cafeteria on Frenchay Campus, is your one-stop-shop for a lunchtime meal. There are sandwiches, sushi and four food stations to choose from.

We especially love the Eat Well For Less deal – a hot meal for under £5. Look out for the global specials they have too!

Open Monday – Friday, 08:30-18:30.

Wild Kitchen – S block

Whether you’re a full-time vegan or trying to cut down your meat consumption, it’s easy to do in The Wild Kitchen. Their menu is fully plant based, fully delicious and fully affordable.

You have to try smoothie bowls for a breakfast treat. And did you know that the leaves and veggies they serve are grown right here on campus?

Open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday (08:00-16:00); Wednesday and Friday (08:00-15:00).

The Atrium – X Block

Locally-sourced food and drink, hot drinks and sandwiches are on the menu at The Atrium.

Personally, I love the warming selection of pie and mash options (goats cheese and spinach – yum!) but there’s also burgers, jacket potatoes and flatbreads. The Atrium cooks everything to order so it’s super fresh.

Open Monday-Thursday (08:00-16:30) and Friday (08:00-15:00).

Street Food Community – The Plaza

It always whips round the office when there is a food truck on campus. Depending on the day, there will be a different local trader on campus. So far this year we have had pizza, bagels, jerk chicken and burritos.

And if you like that, you’re going to love the street food markets in Bristol…

Off campus

Bristol is a top destination for foodies. We’re not only famous for cheese around these parts! There are restaurants cooking food from all over the world, markets selling quick bites and countless cafes specialising in breakfasts and brunch.

Filton Abbeywood Retail Park

Don’t want to catch a bus anywhere? Filton Abbeywood is a 15 minute walk away (even less if you’re in Student Village!) and has some of Britain’s most loved chain restaurants for a little treat-yourself tea.

  • Nando’s – peri-peri chicken and sides
  • McDonald’s – open 24-hours at weekends
  • Barranco Lounge – great for a brunch!

Head out of the North Entrance and go down the hill to your left.

St Nick’s Market

In the heart of Bristol’s Old City you’ll find St Nicholas’ Market – or as locals will call it: St Nick’s. You can buy trinkets and gifts alongside a spot of lunch from one of the many food traders inside. Our top three are:

  • Eatchu – Japanese dumplings and rice
  • Low and Slow – USA style barbecue
  • Matina – Middle Eastern wraps (expect a queue!)

Getting to St Nick’s couldn’t be easier from Frenchay Campus. Jump on any of the Metrobuses heading towards the city and get off at The Centre.

Gloucester Road

Did you know that Gloucester Road is the longest independent high-street in the country? In amongst the shops are loads of cafes, pubs and restaurants. I’ve lived here five years and still haven’t ticked off everywhere you can go along this stretch of road! Our must-eats are:

The 74 is the best route along Gloucester Road from Frenchay Campus. The 70 and 72 will take you to parts of it too.

Harbourside Street Food Market

Held four times a week, Harbourside Street Food Market showcases the best of Bristol’s food. With different traders each week bringing different cuisines, there is something to suit everyone’s taste buds. You could be enjoying a steaming hot bowl of ramen and your friend could be getting the perfect cheese pull from their pizza slice!

Traders to look out for:

Get on the city bound M1, M3 or M4 bus and be in The Centre in 15 minutes.
