My experience as a ResLife Assistant
As a ResLife (Residential Life) Assistant, I've had the opportunity to be fully engaged in the dynamic tapestry of campus life. My position has been broad and enjoyable, ranging from event planning to resident support and guiding the residents.
Let me take you on a journey through my experiences, challenges, and the invaluable lessons I've learned along the way.
One of the most rewarding aspects of becoming a ResLife Assistant is the ability to interact with individuals from all origins and cultures. Whether we organize cultural events, day trips, or art events, our goal is to create an inviting and inclusive environment in which all residents feel appreciated and respected. These exchanges have widened and improved my awareness of the complexity of human experiences.
What do I do?
My goal is to assist residents as they settle into their FutureLets accommodations, as well as to be someone students can contact if they require assistance or simply want to chat. During the academic year, we hold events at Godiva Place, The Cycle Works, and Bishop Gate almost daily. We host a plethora of events, including cooking, baking, arts & crafts, sports socials, health and wellness drop-ins, movie nights, cultural celebrations, and day trips. There is something for everyone!
Creating a sense of community within the resident halls is essential to the ResLife experience. From icebreaker events during orientation to weekly floor meetings, I've seen a bunch of strangers become a tight-knit community. Residents form friendships that go beyond the constaints of their living space through social events, community service projects, and collaborative activities resulting in a supporting network that enriches their university experience.
How I make a difference
As a ResLife Assistant, I've had the opportunity to serve as a mentor and resource for residents facing the hardships of university life. Our mission is to provide the support and assistance required to facilitate personal and academic growth, whether it's by delivering academic help, listening to residents, organizing fun-filled evenings to de-stress or connecting them with campus resources. Building trust and rapport with residents is critical because it allows them to seek help and support, when necessary, thereby contributing to their overall well-being and success.
What Have I Learned?
While the position of ResLife Assistant is extremely rewarding, it also presents a number of challenges. Balancing academic tasks with job expectations can be difficult at times, necessitating strong time management and prioritization skills. Additionally, managing interpersonal dynamics within the resident hall community necessitates patience, empathy, and good communication skills. However, overcoming these obstacles has been critical to my personal and professional development, providing me with vital abilities that transcend far beyond the scope of ResLife.
My experience as a ResLife Assistant has been marked by development, learning, and significant interactions. Through this experience, I've learned the value of empathy, resilience, and adaptability in creating a supporting and welcoming community. I've improved my leadership abilities, gained a better understanding of diversity, and developed lasting bonds that greatly enhanced my university experience.
Being a ResLife Assistant has been more than just a job; it has been a transforming experience that has affected me profoundly. From encouraging community spirit to giving support and direction, to travelling across the country or to cook or create art, the role has allowed me to make a significant difference in the lives of people while also promoting personal and professional development.
As I reflect on my experiences, I am happy for the chances, difficulties, and lessons learnt along the road, and I hope to continue this journey of growth and community-building in the years ahead.
