How to become a minimalist student
When people think about minimalism, the first thing that comes to mind is eliminating things. Minimalism is actually about having all you need and not hoarding stuff you don't even use. College rooms are not the biggest ones, and every inch of free space is a blessing.
As a student, you don't have tons of money which is another reason to become a minimalist student so that you can spare some money and make smart choices for your wallet.
So what is it that can make you a minimalist student?
1. Change your notetaking habits
Writing notes on a laptop or iPad will not only reduce the number of notebooks and other papers that occupy space in your room. You will also need to carry less to your classes and save trees.
If you are keen on using notebooks, consider having fewer or having ones with a section for each subject.
There are lots of software and apps that you could use for notes such as Microsoft Word, Evernote or Notion.
2. Avoid distractions when studying
The smart function on your phone 'Do not disturb' mode or 'Work,' will stop the annoying notifications popping up and it will be easier to focus on tasks you need to do. Also, you could disconnect from the internet or turn off your phone completely. In doing so, you are not only embracing the minimalist life but also, hopefully, getting better grades.
3. Clear out your social media
Regarding distractions social media can be a huge source of distraction and procrastination.
Social media can take up a lot of your time which could be spent on more important activities such as studying or a hobby. You could start by unfollowing and unfriending people that don't inspire you or don't even remember the reason for being in contact with them. Next, delete apps you no longer use or intend to use.
That will give you a feeling of mental decluttering and more brainpower for your studies.
4. Declutter your wardrobe
One way of doing this is to try clothes out and see if they still fit you and spark 'joy'. The other way is to do the coat hanger trick.
Hang all your clothes on hangers and make the fronts face the same direction. Then, as you wear something, put it back in your closet and face it in the opposite direction. After one or two months, donate those clothes you didn't wear to a charity. It will help less fortunate people and give you more space and organisation in your life.
5. Cook with your roommates or friends
Rather than getting expensive deliveries or cooking yourself, make it fun and enjoy social time and food simultaneously! You won't only save money on the meal, but also it will make cleaning more pleasant, as you all distribute roles for each other.
I hope these tips inspired you to become a more minimalist student and helped you organise your life a little bit better.
