Top Instagram accounts to follow while studying in Cardiff

By ResLife 16 Sep 2020

We all love a scroll on Instagram, so we've picked out some of the best accounts to follow whilst you are here in Cardiff!

University-related

@residencelifecu: Probably the most important account you will need to follow; your Residence Life Team are here to make your time at Cardiff as memorable, happy and safe as possible! Follow us for updates on the latest events, exercise routines, delicious recipes, fun quizzes and so much more! Reach out to us if you have any questions regarding life in halls, student well-being, support services or anything really!

@cardiffuni: The official account for Cardiff University on Instagram; make sure to follow it to get the latest news relating to university-wide regulations. If you take any photos at the university and post them on Instagram, tag this account along with #cardiffuni so that they can then share your post on their page!

@cardiffunilib: This is the official Instagram account for the libraries at Cardiff University. Message them about anything that has to do with library services: from requesting and borrowing books, to reserving studying rooms, to electronic journals, to citation enquiries.

@cardiffstudents: Another must-follow Instagram account, this is the official page for Cardiff University’s Students’ Union. Follow it for the latest news coming out from the SU about correspondences with the university and Vice Chancellor, student voice, elections, sabbatical officer updates and much more!

@volunteercusu: Keep up to date with Cardiff Uni volunteering by following their official Instagram page. Learn of the newest volunteering opportunities, how to log your volunteer hours, when and where volunteering fairs are taking place, and keep up to date with the ever-popular Jailbreak events!

@lovecardiffsu: Love Cardiff is the name of the shop that sells Cardiff Uni merch. It is located on the ground floor of the SU. This is their official Instagram page. Take a look at it if you are planning on buying some Cardiff Uni clothes, accessories or gifts for yourself or for someone!

@cardiffunisport: Follow Cardiff University Sport to keep up with all sports-related news. They often post about individual and team success stories, so make sure to give them a follow to keep well-informed. They have also been posting short, detailed exercise videos that you could do from home.

@cardiffathleticunion: You should definitely be following the AU’s Instagram page if you are part of a sports club or if one of your friends is. Through their page you can keep up to date on all the BUCS competitions and games, Welsh Varsity, Medics Varsity etc.

The best of Cardiff and Wales

@visitcardiff: Visit Cardiff is “the official tourism organization for Cardiff”! If you follow them, you will get an endless supply of some beautiful pictures of Cardiff, its people, pets, and much more. They also often post about the upcoming festivals that are in the city, as well as about some lesser known places in Cardiff which you can take your friends and family to. Tag them in your posts along with #DiscoverCardiff to be shared on their feed.

@ilovesthediff: This account brings you pictures from all around Cardiff. They post a lot about the city’s history, culture, and heritage. A lot of their posts are trivia-based, where they ask their followers questions to test how much they know about The ‘Diff (which if you haven’t guessed already is short for CarDIFF).

@thebestofcardiff: Bringing you photos from all across the nation’s capital.

@itsoncardiff: This account brings you pictures and news from to keep up with what’s happening in Cardiff.

@wearecardiff: An account that shares pretty pictures of our pretty Cardiff.

@butepark: Apparently, Bute Park is also an Arboretum, and this is its official Instagram page. An Arboretum is a botanical garden that houses trees exclusively. The page often posts images of the birds that you see all-year-round and seasonally in the park.

@cardiff_blues: This is the official Instagram page for Cardiff’s premier rugby team, the Cardiff Blues. For those of you who do not know, not being a rugby fan is considered sacrilege in Welsh territory, so if I were you, I would get acquainted with the name of the rugby team in my city, at the least.

@cardiffcityfc: For all the football fans out there, this is the official Instagram account for Cardiff’s very own Bluebirds, Cardiff City FC. Make sure to follow them and cheer them on so that they can get back into the Premier League!

@visitwales: Honestly, Wales is beautiful. There are so many breath-taking and simply stunning places to visit. It is such a shame that many of us students do not know about these places and spend most of our time just in Cardiff. Do not be one of those students. Make as much use of what little time you are going to spend in Wales (that is if you are not actually from Wales) and go forth and explore. Hopefully this Instagram page will motivate you and provide ideas as to where you can go.

@walesonline: Although WalesOnline is one of the primary local news agencies in Wales, it does not post news on its Instagram page, rather its page is more of a collection of pictures from around the country. Nonetheless, some of the pictures are wonderful. They do post some items of news on the story, however, but nothing major.

Photography

These photographers are mainly based in Wales and capture spectacular images of the magical moments they witness and the enchanting places they visit. Their photos will take you on a wild and dazzling experience that will make you feel as if you are in the moment with them, which will hopefully encourage you to actually visit those breathtaking sites and witness the beauty and magnanimity firsthand.

@harplington: While she shoots a lot in Wales, many of Georgina Harper’s photos are from elsewhere in the UK and some even in Europe. They are amazing, nonetheless.

@alynwallace: For those of you who are interested in astrophotography, stargazing, and outer space, this account is a must follow.

@finn: Finn Beales is an award-winning photographer based in Wales. He is actually based in the Black Mountains, which is a group of hills spreading across southeast Wales into parts of England. While his Instagram features photos from his travels throughout the world, he posts surreal pictures from his home here in Wales every now and then.

@photoj_lorna: Lorna Cable is a photojournalist who graduated from University of South Wales. She is an activist who attends and captures moments from different protests and rallies taking place in Cardiff.

Food

@cardiff.foodguide: Probably the biggest food guide account in Wales, this Instagram page offers detailed photographic reviews of restaurants throughout southeast Wales. They have a very extensive highlights section where they organise restaurants based on cuisine.

@cardiffhalalfood: This very popular and active Instagram account offers reviews of Halal restaurants in Cardiff and South Wales. They post pictures of the restaurants they go to and discuss food quality, price, portions, and more.

@cardiffffoodie: Another food blogger and photographer based in Cardiff, this page is less of a food critique-type-of-page and more of a photographic food blog. A lot of their posts have to do with desserts and sweet foods!

@cardifffoodjunkie: For all those junk-food lovers, satiate your desires by following this Instagram page whose posts have everything to do with the junkiest of foods including burgers, desserts, sweets, cakes, donuts, and so much more, and whose admin is a “self-confessed donut connoisseur”.

@cardiffandswanseafoodie: Yet another food blogging and reviewing account based in Cardiff and Swansea.

@huntinghalalcardiff: In terms of food, there does seem to be quite a lot of restaurants that are completely or partially Halal in Cardiff. As it may be difficult figuring out which restaurants are these, head over to this Instagram page to see what options are available. They also offer reviews on the restaurants they visit, although their reviews tend to be shorter and more straightforward.

@diffoodreviews: Yet another food blogging and reviewing account based in Cardiff that can inspire you to choose a restaurant to go to alone or with your friends when you have absolutely no idea what you want to eat or where you want to go.

@avantgardevegan: A big name amongst vegan chefs, Gaz Oakley is actually from Cardiff! Follow his account for pictures of mouth-watering, fulfilling, vegetarian meals that even non-vegetarians can barely resist. (He is supposed to make a restaurant announcement soon, fingers crossed it will be in Cardiff!).

@mincepiereviewswales: For those of you looking for an answer to what is probably the most critical question come Christmas time, ‘where to find the best mince pie?’ we present to you to this Instagram account that serves that exact purpose. They have been running the account for two years now, and during both of these years the same British supermarket has been declared victorious.
